In present day practice, cashiers would look at each merchandise, scan the bar code and remove the security device form the merchandise. When the merchandise is brought out of the store, the unique code of the tag is queried in the POS database. If it was paid for, nothing happens. If the item has not been paid for, the alarm is triggered and the shoplifter is apprehended.
